Welcome to the first Freitag’s Favorite post! Throughout the month, I will tell you a favorite book or genre that I have. Today’s post is all about poetry! Two of my favorite authors of poetry are Jack Prelutsky and Shel Silverstein.
Shel Silverstein has several poetry books but two that are favorites of mine and my students are A Light in the Attic * and Where the Sidewalk Ends. *These two books have been sitting on my bookshelf since I was 8. Even now, my students enjoy picking up these collections of poems. The books have funny poems and silly pictures that help the students visualize what the poems are about.
Jack Prelutsky has several books as well! He wrote one of my favorite collections of poems. The New Kid on the Block is a hilarious collection of silly poems and silly pictures. As a young reader, I remember enjoying the poems that I felt were written for me…an eight year old girl who liked to laugh! My third graders will fight over this book, eventually settling on reading with a partner, taking turns reading their favorite poems to each other.
All three of these books are oldies, but definitely goodies! What books do you keep in your classroom or home libraries that remind you of your childhood?
